Marijampole Regional Development Council

The Marijampole Regional Development Council is one of the founding members of the Network of the Three Seas Regions.

The Marijampolė region is a border region in the southwest of Lithuania, the borders of which coincide with the borders of the ethnic Suvalkija region. The Marijampolė region is famous for historical figures who contributed to the independence of Lithuania and the survival of the Lithuanian language. In the 19th century, during the Lithuanian writing and press ban, banned books were smuggled across the border to Lithuania. History shows how important cooperation between neighboring regions is.

The region consists of 5 municipalities – Kalvarija, Kazlų Rūda, Marijampolė, Vilkaviškis district and Šakiai district. In the beginning of 2023, there were 135,891 inhabitants in the region. It’s a compact, peaceful place with great infrastructure, rich culture, and nature.

Main transport corridors cross Marijampolė region – Via Baltica and Rail Baltica – ensuring the movement of goods and people within the European Union. A free economic zone operates in the Marijampole region.

The Marijampole Regional Development Council is responsible for preparing the Marijampole Regional Development Plan, coordinating its implementation, and ensuring the involvement of socio-economic partners in this process.
