Maramureș County

The Maramureș County is one of the founding members of the Network of the Three Seas Regions.

Maramureș is a unique location in the geographical heartland of Europe, land of wooden churches, mythological richness, impressive landscapes, carefully preserving the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of immemorial peasant past.

With more than 500 monuments, museums and collections, part of the local cultural heritage, including a newly set up circuit of wooden churches with 8 of them part of the UNESCO World Heritage Patrimony, Maramureș is proudly emerging as a region where traditions and religion are part of the everyday life.

Customs have survived over the centuries, especially in the villages, where the community still wears traditional handmade costumes on daily basis, enjoying social village meetings and celebrations.

Nature lovers will enjoy the mountainous landscapes and breath-taking valleys, as Maramureș is part of the northern chain of the Oriental Carpathian Mountains and the plateau of Transylvania, counting one natural park of national interest, 9 „Natura 2000” sites and 34 nature protected areas.

Maramureș is a generous destination, offering routes that follow county’s greenways, exploring cultural heritage and culinary experiences, giving also opportunities for two wheels riders and off-road enthusiasts.

It’s worth mentioning among the best of Maramureș, the variety of accommodation offers from hotels to family run guesthouses where the tourist blends in with local authentic lifestyle, enjoying the best of a unique gastronomy.

The industrial sector at county level has undergone major structural changes in recent times years, materialized in the disappearance or massive restructuring of some traditional industrial branches (extractive industry, metallurgical industry, construction industry machinery, building materials, textiles, etc.), generally energy-intensive and subsidized by the communist authorities, in favor of others with high competitiveness in the context international.

The most important contributors to the county’s turnover come from the manufacturing sector: the furniture manufacturing generates 29% of the yearly county’s turnover (top 5 most important furniture companies are locate here), followed by the 24% generated by the manufacturing of electrical equipment and components, while the wood processing sector contributes with 12,5%. Other important players in the county manufacturing sector are the metallurgical sector, the food industry and the rubber and plastic manufacturing.

Consequently, the development strategy of Maramures County is directed towards integrating innovation and competitiveness in the future sustainable growth initiatives ensuring the development of infrastructure and public utility services.
